A6 · SPECIALIST · 4-HOUR WORKSHOP
Radio 1: waves, antennas and a link budget
Teachers can explain frequency, antenna, power and range in classroom language, and complete a two-node LoRa test.
Grade 9–12 Physical Sciences, Technology, Coding & Robotics, geography clubs.
Foundation Certificate.
4 hours, plus a school application task
IN THE WORKSHOP
What you will explore.
- 0:00–0:50
Radio without mystique: frequency, wavelength, 433 MHz, why antennas have a length.
- 0:50–1:40
Link budget as a story: what you transmit, what the air takes, what arrives.
- 1:40–3:00
Two boards, a short message, then a courtyard range test. Record where it fails.
- 3:00–4:00
Regulations in plain language: power, duty cycle, school permission.
BUILD IT. USE IT.
Take the learning into class.
You leave with
- A range-test log.
- A one-page ‘radio for Grade 10’ explainer.
Your school application
Repeat the range test at school. Learners mark the fail point on a site sketch.
Allow about two hours outside the facilitated session.
Curriculum connection
Physical Sciences waves; Technology communication systems; Geography spatial data.
