Smart rocketry 1: fly, measure, compare

Teachers can simulate a flight in OpenRocket, pack a simple logger, and plan a legal, supervised model-rocket comparison.

Who it is for

Grade 8–12 Physical Sciences, Technology, maths, science clubs.

Before you begin

Foundation Certificate. School must accept the flight safety rules.

Contact time

4 hours, plus a school application task

IN THE WORKSHOP

What you will explore.

  1. 0:00–0:40

Safety gate: motors, site, permission, what this module will not do.

  2. 0:40–1:40

OpenRocket: mass, motor, predicted altitude. Change one variable.

  3. 1:40–3:00

Flight logger: barometer altitude and acceleration. Fit it in a printed rocket.

  4. 3:00–4:00

Comparison plan: predicted vs measured, and why they will differ.

BUILD IT. USE IT.

Take the learning into class.

You leave with

  • A simulation file and a packed logger.
  • A flight-day checklist.

Your school application

Complete one supervised flight or a drop-test if the site is not ready. File predicted vs measured.

Allow about two hours outside the facilitated session.

Curriculum connection

Physical Sciences mechanics and energy; Mathematics functions and graphs; Technology design process.

YOUR EQUIPMENT

Tools for this module.

Springbot or flight core, barometer xChip (IWB), accelerometer, 3D-printed or kit model rocket, OpenRocket on a laptop.

Confirm the equipment and software arrangements when you enquire. Specialist field activities require appropriate supervision and permissions.

CPTD endorsement and points are not yet confirmed. Read the CPTD information
