Smart rocketry 2: engine tests on a load cell

Teachers can run a static test, record thrust over time, and compare the curve with the motor’s published data.

Who it is for

Same as A8. Small group, safety lead present.

Before you begin

A8. A1 useful for the test stand.

Contact time

4 hours, plus a school application task

IN THE WORKSHOP

What you will explore.

  1. 0:00–0:40

Stand design, restraint, fire rules, who may be in the room.

  2. 0:40–1:40

Load cell calibration with known masses.

  3. 1:40–3:00

Static test and the thrust curve.

  4. 3:00–4:00

Compare with the OpenRocket motor file. Write the learner conclusion frame.

BUILD IT. USE IT.

Take the learning into class.

You leave with

  • A calibration note and a thrust curve.
  • A safety sign-off sheet.

Your school application

Use the curve in a lesson on forces. No unsupervised motor handling. File the sign-off.

Allow about two hours outside the facilitated session.

Curriculum connection

Physical Sciences forces and momentum; Technology materials and structures; measurement uncertainty.

YOUR EQUIPMENT

Tools for this module.

Load cell, amplifier, Springbot or prototype xChip, test stand, approved model-rocket motor, safety kit.

Confirm the equipment and software arrangements when you enquire. Specialist field activities require appropriate supervision and permissions.

CPTD endorsement and points are not yet confirmed. Read the CPTD information
