F4 · FOUNDATION · 4-HOUR WORKSHOP
Decisions, data and simple logging
Teachers can use variables, thresholds and conditionals, and export a small data set learners can graph.
Grade 4–9 core. FET optional.
F3.
4 hours, plus a school application task
IN THE WORKSHOP
What you will explore.
- 0:00–0:40
Variables and thresholds. ‘If light is below… then…’
- 0:40–1:40
A classroom monitor: too dark, too hot, too humid. Alerts on display and buzzer.
- 1:40–2:40
Logging a series of readings. From live value to a table.
- 2:40–3:30
Learners graph by hand or in a spreadsheet. Outliers and sensor error.
- 3:30–4:00
Assessment ideas: practical rubric, not a written test only.
BUILD IT. USE IT.
Take the learning into class.
You leave with
- A threshold-monitor project.
- A 4-level practical rubric.
Your school application
Learners use the monitor in a real school space (classroom, hall, food garden). Teacher submits one anonymised graph and the rubric used.
Allow about two hours outside the facilitated session.
Curriculum connection
Coding conditionals and variables; Mathematics data; NS energy and change; Life Skills / Life Orientation environment links.
